Accounting
American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, www.aicpa.org This organization has existed since 1887. CPAs as well as students who are not CPAs are eligible to join. The benefits to student members are access to publications, scholarships, and an assortment of accounting information. American Accounting Association, www.aaahq.org This organization has existed since 1916. The benefits of membership include access to publications, job placement services, and an opportunity to participate in forums to help shape the accounting profession.

Association for Computers and Taxation (ACT), www.taxact.org This is a national, non-profit organization which helps its members to identify and solve problems in automating the corporate tax function. They have a forum on their website and they also publish newsletters and sponsor conferences throughout the year. Benefits to membership include discounts to attend the conferences, various ACT publications and access to a database of computer hardware and software used in different corporate tax departments. Cost of membership is $125 per person annually and $400 for legal entities.
Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), www.michcpa.org. The MACPA is Michigan's premier resource for CPA's in education, government, industry and public accounting as well as educators and students. Members of this organization have access to more than 300 continuing professional education courses annually along with other related association task forces and legislative advocacy programs. They also offer member savings plans to a variety of products and services such as insurance rates, credit cards and popular magazines. Membership fees range from $20 to over $200 annually, depending on different criteria.
International Accounts Payable Professionals (IAPP), www.iappnet.org International Accounts Payable Professionals, Inc. is dedicated to providing its members with all the necessary resources to succeed in the ever-changing payables environment. IAPP is recognized for its support of state-of-the-art process improvements and for helping its members strive toward new ideas and goals. Simultaneously, its purpose is to set a standard for education among individuals in the AP profession. Membership in IAPP will provide you, and your company, with the necessary resources to succeed in an ever changing payables environment.
American Payroll Association (APA), www.americanpayroll.org This association is responsible for keeping people informed as to the latest developments in payroll. This includes CPP training, tax update information, extended training and education and certification. They also conduct seminars on the latest software and developments. The APA currently has over 22,000 members in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico.

This organization is based on the concept that work performance should not be based on race, gender, or ethnicity. This organization is one that would come in handy for EEO officers, Affirmative Action Officers, HRM professionals, and companies who want to comply with our affirmative action laws. It's also an organization that many professional leaders belong to, so they can see what legal cases are changing our laws and if any new laws would apply to them.

They have developed a program to establish certification for professionals in this field. They offer two types of certification. Being a Certified Purchasing Professional (CCP) or a Certified Professional Purchasing Manager (CPPM). Their focus as stated on their web page is the dedication to the advancement of the purchasing profession and those who are in it.

They are dedicated to providing ideas and support for both purchasing and payable professionals.
Home Builders Association of Livingston County (HBA),www.hbalc.com The Livingston County Chapter of the HBA is a good resource for builders as well as a great networking tool for professionals in the residential lending industry. Membership is not limited to builders and banks, many title companies, remodelers and sub contractors belong as well as some building material suppliers. Becoming a member gives builders access to a strong network of lobbyists and also the opportunity to hear from professional speakers, that will cover topics related to the building industry, at meetings throughout the year. A variety of annual activities including golf outings, and a softball game provide for great networking possibilities.

For anyone who is looking to build some relationships in the Michigan realty community MAR is a great place to start. Lenders and title companies alike are invited to a variety of events including MAR's large annual convention. While this organization is primarily intended to for Realtor's the best thing anyone in a related field can do, is to be there to help when they need it. Offering help for their convention and providing guest speakers for their meetings are two great ways to be involved without being a Realtor.
