There are a variety of resources and tools available to you when you're trying to find your niche in the business world. Check the resources below to inventory your skills and interests, or get tips for resume writing or preparing cover letters....

Before you interview with a company, consider doing a little research about the industry and the specific company. Your preparation and professionalism will translate to a more successful interview. You'll also be ready to ask relevant questions about the company.

Remember that many jobs are never posted, so another way to jump start your job search is to take some time to meet with people in your area of interest and participate in an "informational interview." This is a national, non-profit organization which helps its members to identify and solve problems in automating the corporate tax function.  They have a forum on their website and they also publish newsletters and sponsor conferences throughout the year. Benefits to membership include discounts to attend the conferences, various ACT publications and access to a database of computer hardware and software used in different corporate tax departments. Cost of membership is $125 per person annually and $400 for legal entities.

Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MACPA), www.michcpa.org.
The MACPA is Michigan's premier resource for CPA's in education, government, industry and public accounting as well as educators and students. Members of this organization have access to more than 300 continuing professional education courses annually along with other related association task forces and legislative advocacy programs. They also offer member savings plans to a variety of products and services such as insurance rates, credit cards and popular magazines. Membership fees range from $20 to over $200 annually, depending on different criteria.

International Accounts Payable Professionals, Inc. is dedicated to providing its members with all the necessary resources to succeed in the ever-changing payables environment. The Livingston County Chapter of the HBA is a good resource for builders as well as a great networking tool for professionals in the residential lending industry. Membership is not limited to builders and banks, many title companies, remodelers and sub contractors belong as well as some building material suppliers. Becoming a member gives builders access to a strong network of lobbyists and also the opportunity to hear from professional speakers, that will cover topics related to the building industry, at meetings throughout the year. A variety of annual activities including golf outings, and a softball game provide for great networking possibilities.

The Michigan Association of Realtors is a large organization that helps with a wide variety of needs for Real Estate Professionals. For anyone who is looking to build some relationships in the Michigan realty community MAR is a great place to start. Lenders and title companies alike are invited to a variety of events including MAR's large annual convention. While this organization is primarily intended to for Realtor's the best thing anyone in a related field can do, is to be there to help when they need it. Offering help for their convention and providing guest speakers for their meetings are two great ways to be involved without being a Realtor.

This group concentrates on enhancing existing programs concentrating on accreditation and code of ethics. PRSA is dedicated to strengthening alliances with other worldwide relations organizations.
