HOWELL – Maria Abood, a senior at Tecumseh High School, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at Cleary University.

“Maria Abood will add a spark to the offensive side of the game for the Cougars this fall,” said Droo Callahan, women’s soccer coach for Cleary University. “She plays with extreme passion and works hard defensively as a front runner. I am extremely glad to have her joining us this fall.”

“I am excited about playing for an inaugural collegiate team,” said Abood.

Abood, a forward, earned her varsity letter during her freshman year and played varsity for four years. In 2010 she received the Effort and Persistance Award for her play. She also played club soccer for the Michigan Tigers and the Milan Soccer Club.

“Maria displays a very good work ethic, dedication and discipline,” said Milan Trajlov, her club soccer coach. “She never missed a practice, always worked hard and was willing to sacrifice for the team. Naturally, she possesses good endurance, excellent speed, never gives up trying, and works well with teammates. She understands what it means to be a member of a team and I was very glad to have the opportunity to coach Maria. I often wish more players were as well educated and committed to hard work.

Off the field, Abood is an honor student who has earned recognition for her music talents.

“I was drawn to Cleary for its small class sizes, location to my home and its soccer program,” Abood said. “I am interested in pursuing a degree in the medical field. I thought a great way to begin would be to learn the business aspects of the medical profession, and will pursue a degree in business management.”

Cleary University reintroduced its collegiate athletic program in 2011 when it formed teams for men’s and women’s golf and cross country. Golf and cross country competed in 2012. Men’s and women’s soccer teams are scheduled to compete in 2013. Cleary is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
