HOWELL – Thanks to the “School of Choice” program, Cody and Aleighsha Engisch went to different high schools. Aleighsha, went to Linden High School, while Cody attended Byron High School.
“Our teams competed against each a few times,” said Cody Engisch.
The brother and sister became teammates recently when Cody Engisch signed a letter of intent to run cross country for Cleary University. Aleighsha Engisch signed with Cleary in May and became a member of the Cougars women’s cross country team.
“This is the first time we’ve been on the same team, so it will be cool,” said Cody Engisch, who graduated from Byron High School in 2012. He ran cross country for Lansing Community College before transferring to Cleary.
“Cody's strong work ethic and prior collegiate running experience is a great asset to the Cleary men's cross country team.” said Jeff Hough, the coach of Cleary University’s men’s cross country team.
While at Byron High School, Cody ran track and cross country. He was all-league for the Genessee Athletic Conference and was part of the team that earned All-State Academic honors in 2010.
Cody Engisch said his decision to come to Cleary was easy.
“I wanted to run again and there was a scholarship,” he said. “The personal attention you get a Cleary is huge, you are not just a number.”
Cleary University reintroduced its collegiate athletic program in 2011 when it formed teams for men’s and women’s golf and cross country. Golf and cross country competed in 2012. Men’s and women’s soccer teams are scheduled to compete in 2013. Cleary is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
