HOWELL – Cleary University’s Tony Grams, a senior from Fenton, has been recognized for academic achievement by the United States Collegiate Athletics Association.

Grams, a business entrepreneurship major at Cleary, had a 3.9 grade point average while playing midfielder for the Cougars.

"Tony is one of our hardest working players on and off of the field,” said Greeley. “He gives 100% in practices and 100% in games. The fact that he was able to achieve his National All Academic distinction is proof that he also gives 100% in the classroom. This is the kind of young man that employers are looking for and we are proud of his selection for this honor."

“It’s an honor,” said Grams. “It’s great to be able to play collegiate athletics, but the reason I am at Cleary is to get a degree. That is the real focus of being a student-athlete.”

The USCAA guidelines for being nominated for Academic All-American status are:

• All student-athletes, sophomores, juniors, and seniors at four-year institutions and sophomores at two- year institutions, shall be eligible for Academic All-American awards.

• Overall grade point averages must be 3.5 (on a 4 point system) or greater.

• GPA’s must be documented by way of an unofficial school transcript.

Cleary University reintroduced its collegiate athletic program in 2011 when it formed teams for men and women’s golf and cross country. Cleary’s athletic program also includes: men’s and women’s soccer, baseball, softball and lacrosse. Baseball and softball are scheduled to begin in 2015.
