Cougars sign McDonald for women's soccer

HOWELL – Paige McDonald, a senior from Lapeer East High School, has signed to play women’s soccer for Cleary University.

"Paige's soccer range is outstanding and will be relied on heavily for the next four years. She represents what we want in the program and will help shape the Cougars for years to come,” said Andrew Callahan, women’s soccer coach at Cleary.

"I just liked that Cleary had a new soccer program and that I might be able to help build it,” said McDonald, a defender.

McDonald, who played on the varsity team all four years, helped Lapeer East to a 11-6-5 record for 2012. As a junior she was an honorable mention selection to the All Flint Metro League team. She also was named to the all-district team.

McDonald also played soccer with the Vardar North 95 club team.

“I knew I wanted to play soccer since I was five,” said McDonald, a scholar-athlete and a member of the honor roll.

“I always want to put the right player with the right coach and we knew what kind of a coach Droo is,’’ said Lapeer East High School women’s soccer coach Chad Kenny.

“I want to be able to look back and say, ‘I was a part of that (building Cleary athletics),’” McDonald said. “Cleary has courses I am interested in, such as business administration in health care. I chose Cleary over other schools because I knew that I would get personal attention and not be just a number in class.”

Cleary University reintroduced its collegiate athletic program in 2011 when it formed teams for men’s and women’s golf and cross country. Golf and cross country competed in 2012. Men’s and women’s soccer teams are scheduled to compete in 2013. Cleary is a member of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA).
