Cleary launches new MBA in Health Care Leadership

HOWELL – According to a survey by the American Management Association, a growing number of health care organizations are not prepared for the sudden loss of leadership.

The survey found that less than seven percent of health care organizations are well prepared to deal with the loss of key members of senior management. Approximately 30 percent are not prepared at all.

To help provide opportunities for health care professionals to advance into leadership positions, Cleary University has created a master of business administration program in health care leadership.

“This is a very timely and relevant degree,” said Marge Wisniewski, the faculty chair for health care management at Cleary University. “This is a very hot topic, considering the state of the healthcare industry in the United States.”

Wisniewski is very familiar with healthcare leadership issues. She is responsible for the daily operation of the Detroit branch of the national, for-profit, Grace Hospice, which has multiple facilities in Michigan, Ohio and Texas. She was also the administrative director of hospice for the Visiting Nurse Association of Southeast Michigan.

Cleary’s MBA in health care leadership program is a 15-month, 52 credit curriculum, that will be offered in a blended (on ground/online) format on the Washtenaw Campus in Ann Arbor.

“The person taking this is not a novice,” Wisniewski said. “They have a bachelor’s degree and may already be working in the health care field, but are ready to take on a leadership role.”

Wisniewski said Cleary’s MBA in health care management will provide the skills and knowledge students need to get ahead in a rapidly changing field.

“It used to be that you worked your way up,” said Wisniewski. “Now healthcare is more sophisticated. It is a fluid business model and a more complex environment.”

Wisniewski said that the program will accommodate 6-12 students in the first cohort.

“There are nurses, clinical technicians, therapists, and office managers who want to move up. This program is their opportunity,” Wisniewski said.
