The Livingston Fine Art Association (LFAA) will welcome local artist and studio owner Charlotte Perkins for a hands-on introduction to fused glass at its Tuesday, Sept. 29 meeting at Cleary University.
The program will take place from 7–9 p.m. and will give participants an opportunity to learn about fused glass while creating a small ornament of their own.
Perkins, owner of The Ceramic Studio Etc. in Howell, will begin with a brief introduction to fused glass and demonstrate the basics of cutting and layering pieces of glass to create a design. Participants will then select from colorful glass pieces and simple design elements to create their own ornament.
Because of the program’s limited timeframe, the activity will focus on fun, approachable techniques that require minimal glass cutting, making it accessible to participants with a variety of experience levels.
Following the program, the ornaments will be fired in a kiln at The Ceramic Studio Etc. and returned for pickup at the next LFAA meeting.
Meet Charlotte Perkins
Perkins has been creating and teaching art programs for more than 20 years. Her experience includes developing and leading summer camps and creative programs in both Michigan and California before returning to Michigan and opening The Ceramic Studio Etc.
Over the past five years, she has grown the Howell studio into a creative space where people of all ages can explore a variety of hands-on art forms. In addition to painting pottery, visitors can work with clay, learn to throw on a pottery wheel, create stoneware and experiment with fused glass.
Perkins’ connection to art began early. Her grandfather, Gerome Kamrowski, was an accomplished artist and longtime professor at the University of Michigan School of Art and Design. She credits him with inspiring her curiosity, encouraging her to experiment with different mediums and teaching her that art is always evolving.
That philosophy continues to influence her work today. Through The Ceramic Studio Etc., Perkins enjoys giving people opportunities to try new techniques, experiment creatively and experience the satisfaction of making something themselves.
