As spring started to bloom, Cleary University welcomed a month filled with inspiration, achievement, and meaningful reflection. From world-class guest speakers to international recognition in business competitions and powerful displays of advocacy, April reminded us of what makes Cleary such a special place: bold student leadership, a commitment to excellence, and a community that supports growth in every form. Here’s a look at just a few of the moments that defined April on our campus.
A Virtual Visit with Dan Milstein: Lessons in Grit and Greatness
This month, Cleary students had the unique opportunity to connect with Daniel Milstein, Founder and CEO of the Gold Star Family of Companies, NHL agent, and bestselling author, who joined us via Zoom as part of our “Professor of the Day” series.
Broadcasting from his home office overlooking the Atlantic, Dan shared a story that transcends borders and background. Arriving in America at 16 with just 17 cents and limited English, Dan worked multiple jobs at McDonald’s before eventually building a multimillion-dollar business empire. His virtual presentation wasn’t just a lecture—it was a masterclass in perseverance, vision, and what it means to chase the American Dream.
He shared stories like that of AJ French, who rose from a $10/hour job to CEO, earning $2.3 million annually. These stories weren’t just inspiring—they were blueprints for our students, proving that success is not limited by circumstance. “Success is rented,” Dan reminded us, “and the rent is due every day.”
Dan’s visit showed us that while technology connects us, it’s the power of human potential that truly brings us together. Thank you to everyone who helped make this transformative experience possible.
Cleary DECA Team Shines on the International Stage
Twelve Cleary students took flight this month to represent the university at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in San Francisco. With over 10,000 students in attendance, ICDC is one of the most prestigious business competitions in the world—and Cleary made its mark in unforgettable ways.
In a standout achievement, Macie Mullins and Olivia Williams earned First Place in Business-to-Business Marketing, outperforming 29 elite teams. Matthew Radjewski was named a Top 10 Finalist in the Advertising Campaign category, among 37 competitors. Overall, 50% of the Cleary team advanced to the finals, and half of those finalists came home with awards—an extraordinary feat that sets us apart on the global stage.
Faculty co-advisors Kelly Genei and Justine Defever summed it up perfectly: “The judges weren’t just impressed with their business acumen—they were inspired by their confidence, poise, and the embodiment of the Cleary Mind™.”
Congratulations to our DECA team on their well-earned success. You make us proud!
The Clothesline Project: Voices of Strength and Solidarity
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Cleary University through the powerful and emotional display of The Clothesline Project in Cleary Commons. Presented in partnership with LACASA of Livingston County and championed by the student leaders of The Lighthouse Project, this initiative features survivor-created artwork on t-shirts—each a powerful testament to the resilience, truth, and healing journey of those impacted by sexual violence.
The displayed shirts were created by Cleary students and community members, underscoring the deep personal connections and strength within our campus. Through this project, Cleary reaffirms its commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and compassionate environment. The work of The Lighthouse Project remains a relevant part of that mission, promoting awareness and dialogue that inspires compassion and positive change.
If you or someone you know needs support, resources are available at www.lacasa.org.
As April comes to a close, we look back with pride at a month that showcased the very best of Cleary University. From entrepreneurial spirit and international acclaim to courageous advocacy and heartfelt storytelling, this month reminded us what it means to lead with purpose.
We look forward to even more exciting moments ahead as we continue to build a campus community defined by excellence, integrity, and impact.
