Cleary University announced the hiring of Heather Bateman as the school’s new Director of Athletics on August 21, 2019.

Bateman comes to Cleary with an impressive and expansive career in athletic and campus leadership having most recently served as the Assistant Dean of Student Life & Athletics at Jackson College.

Prior to her leadership role at Jackson College, Bateman served as the Director of Athletics for 4 years and Associate Athletic Director for 8 years at Olivet College. Bateman coached women’s basketball at Wayne State University, University of Detroit-Mercy, and Northwood University. She is a past basketball player herself at Oakland University. She comes from Burton, near Flint, earned her bachelor’s degree in human resources from Oakland University, and a master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University.

Bateman was promoted to the role of Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs in January 2020. She oversees student housing, student life, food service, and facilities in addition to her role as Director of Athletics.

“Supporting student-athletes and coaches building consistency in the Cougar athletics programs is important,” Bateman said.  Encouraging student success goes beyond just participating in one’s sport.  Student-athletes are supported in their studies, within the community, and on the Cleary campus by all staff.”  Participating in all Opportunities inside and out of the classroom is an important aspect of one’s growth.”
